# Build Types

Pick a build type on the Environment's **Source and Build** page. Source builds run on a [Builder](/docs/build/builders/), separate from your
running Apps. Prebuilt images skip the Builder.

## Build Types

### Auto

The default. Builds with Cloud Native Buildpacks and the `heroku/builder:24`
builder, without a Dockerfile. Start here unless the App needs something
specific.

### Buildpack

Cloud Native Buildpacks with a builder you choose, such as
`paketobuildpacks/builder:full`.

### Dockerfile

Builds the `Dockerfile` in the repository, or in its subfolder when one is set.
Use it for full control over the image.

### Static

Detects the static site generator, such as Hugo, Jekyll, Astro or Vite,
builds the site and serves it from Blossom's CDN, with no Containers. A plain
HTML site is served as is. No Dockerfile is needed. See
[Static Site Generators](/docs/build/static/).

### Prebuilt

Deploys an existing image without a build. Public images need no registry;
private images need registry credentials.
